    Our automotive paints make car exteriors more beautiful and prolong car life. In response to the environmental regulations that are strengthening day after day, we have developed the first Korean low-pollution, water-soluble paints. Moreover, through a technical colaboration with AXALTA, we are at the forefront of the automotive paint technology at home and abroad.

    Overview

    Automotive coating is a multilayer coating system. In cars, it generally consists of 3 or 4 coat systems. Each of these paint films has a unique role. Except for chemical conversion coating, electro-deposition(E-Coat), primer surfacer and topcoat are done by polymer coating.

    The rust of a car body is removed by physical surface treatment, and chemical conversion coating is done to improve the adhesion and it prevents rust on the steel substrates. Electro-deposition paint is to obtain a uniform paint film by dipping the car body in electro-deposition bath via surface pretreatment. After electro-deposition paint has been completed, Primer surfacer is done usually by electrostatic coating. Top-coating (Base+Clear coatings) is the finishing coating process, whereby performance is imparted to meet the various and rigorous conditions required for the car as well as its appearance.

    A car that has gone through such processes has a paint film structure as follows.

    Transparent paint

    Electro-deposition paint (cationic) has been used as a primer for almost all car bodies, since it was first used in 1976. This is due to its characteristics of environment-friendliness and economic efficiency. In general, as an epoxy polyamine/isocyanate resins series, it imparts rust resistance and chipping resistance to the car body and coats the car in a film thickness of about 18∼35㎛. A recent trend in electro-deposition technology includes expanding of lead-free electro-deposition paint due to environmental regulations, the development of lower baking temperature type electro-deposition paint (130∼140℃) in response to diversification of car body substrates, and the development of high weathering resistance electro-deposition paint and thin-film electro-deposition paint (ultra High throwing power). Currently most domestic automotive electro-deposition lines have switched to lead-free, and lead-free electro-deposition is being applied to about 90% of cars worldwide. KCC electro-deposition paints were developed in 1984 through a technical partnership with Herberts-Vianova. Following the five heavy metal regulations of the EU, KCC developed and applied an environment-friendly Pb free electro-deposition paint (ED2100) around 2000 and developed and applied high rust resistance electro-deposition paints (High throwing power) (ED3000HT / ECO1000) as the automotive anti corrosive standards were strengthened.

    Surfacer Paints

    A surfacer paint imparts smoothness to the paint film and weather resistance and chipping resistance against bouncing stones to prolong the durability of the car body. The main component of surfacer paints is generally polyester or a urethane metamorphic series, and cars are coated at a thickness of about 30∼40㎛ to impart chipping resistance to the paint film, improve the appearance of the topcoat, and its adhesiveness and rust resistance. By realizing excellent chipping resistance, KCC’s car surfacer has been receiving favorable responses from its customers. KCC has also been supplying an aqueous surface since 2006 thanks to its environmentally-friendly technologies.

    Topcoat Paints

    In general, topcoat is coated wet-on-wet with the basecoat and clear coat to impart appearance (gloss, smoothness), coloration, weather resistance, scratch resistance and chemical resistance. Normally, the basecoat is coated to a film thickness of 15∼20㎛ and the clear coat to a film thickness of 35∼45㎛. The trend in automotive topcoat technology at home and abroad, is the continuous switchover to aqueous series. Making an aqueous basecoat uses a technology that was widely available 20 years ago, but it was delayed in this country because of the delay in legislation of VOC regulations and the incompletion of facility remodeling in the automotive industry. As legislation was visualized and the switchover to an aqueous series in the automotive industry was accelerated, a water-soluble base was produced and applied in large quantities in Hyundai’s Asan Factory for the first time in June 2004. As of February 2011, in the case of Hyundai cars, 70% of domestic car output and about 90% of overseas output are produced using aqueous paints. Now KCC’s world leading automotive technology is being applied in all of Hyundai Motor Company’s factories.

    DGU

    The “Direct Glazing” method for attaching auto glass to the car body is generally employed to lighten the weight of a car body and for the safety of the passengers. For the safety of the passengers, the domestic automotive industry conducts collision tests in accordance with the U. S. Federal Specification FMVSS 212 to give the final supply approval to DGU products. KCC’s DGU products obtain approval from HMC, KMC, GM Daewoo, Ssangyong Motor and Renault-Samsung Motor. DGU is a moisture-curing urethane sealant for fixing car glass. It is a product of excellent and uniform quality produced by the latest automatic continuous production equipment through a technical colaboration with YRC, Ltd. of Japan (since 1987).
